License Requirements
An International Driver’s License issued by your home country or a temporary driving license issued here but this applies only to certain nationalities. A valid driving license, passport and two photographs are required for the procedure. Vehicles in the UAE are driven on the right- hand side of the road.
Major Routes
A good road network system exists in and around Sharjah city with impressive multi-lane highways linking to other emirates. Traffic congestion does exist and driving can be erratic.
Parking
Displaying parking coupons on the dashboard provides an alternative to using car parks. Coupons vary in price depending on the length of time required and the area of the city, and are available next to the parking area.
Public car parks can be found at shopping centers and elsewhere around the city.
Service Stations
Running out of petrol is not a problem for the motorist in United Arab Emirates, petrol stations with convenient stores are situated throughout United Arab Emirates. Petrol is relatively inexpensive.
Car Hire
Most of the international car hire companies are represented in Sharjah. A car-rental desk is located in the Hotel’s Lobby. The minimum age for renting a vehicle is usually 21 years, most car hire companies will arrange for a temporary license, as a part of the hire agreement.
Speed Limits
The speed limit in built up areas is 60 kph and on highways cars may be driven at 100 – 120 kph, as indicated on the road signs. Many areas are controlled by stationary and mobile radar.
In the unlikely event of an accident contact the Traffic Police or Anjad (999). In case of minor accident the vehicle can be moved to the side of the road and call for the Police to make a report. In case of major accident do not remove any of the vehicles until a report has been made and permission given by the Police.
Seat Belts
The wearing of seat belt is compulsory.
Fines
Speed cameras are in operation on both expressways and in urban areas. Please note that all laws in the United Arab Emirates are strictly enforce with fines issued for various offences.
