They would greet one another as “Ahlan wa Sahlan” (hello and welcome). Always use the right hand for shaking hands. Men should not offer to shake a lady’s hand unless she initiates the gesture. Arabs normally greet with a kiss on the nose or embrace – which is between men only.
Dining
When dining as a guest of an Arabic friend or client, always use your right hand to eat or when giving or receiving.
Shoes
It is customary to take off your shoes when entering a house or a place of worship. In accordance with Muslim tradition, it is offensive to point the sole of the foot at someone.
Clothing
Apart from the winter evenings when sweaters and jackets may be required, lightweight summer clothing is suitable for most of the year. Care should be taken to dress conservatively and not to give offence by wearing clothing that may be revealing or considered inappropriate.
Photography
This is generally permitted apart from photographing military installations. It can be offensive to photograph Muslim women and it is generally courteous to ask permission before photographing other people. Print slide film is readily available and reasonably priced. Colour film processing is quick and inexpensive.
Hiring a Taxi
Taxis are metered and it is also advisable to pick a few landmarks beforehand to help you reach your destination. City maps of Sharjah is readily available in all major hotels – check with the Concierge.
